The first day of school is around the proverbial corner. For educators, it’s a time to get the never-ending academic ducks in a row.

I know. I taught English to tweens and teens for 10 years.

Those first couple of weeks are a bit of a honeymoon period: it’s before the comfort of routine sets in, before the deluge of 504 accommodations and parent-teacher meetings, before state assessments begin.

In short, it’s a magical time of possibility, of garnering a student’s desire to learn and — dare I suggest — even develop a love of writing.

Good Old William

A good month ago, I created a challenge based on William Carlos Williams’s famous poem: “This Is Just To Say”

The late and great Williams created poems that could easily be altered to create pieces that move the reader in all sorts of ways. His “The Red Wheelbarrow” is no exception:
